Priscilla Squire blinked as the cold metal jabbed the small of her back, and her intake of breath was quick, but silent. “Not here, not now, please,” she murmured.
A raspy, male voice breathed into her ear. “Agree to meet me, tonight, or I blow this whole joint to smithereens.”
The familiar stench of whiskey curled her stomach. She’d know that odor anywhere. It was burned in her memory. “Giovanni.”
He pressed the gun harder into her back.
Her nod was immediate. Nothing could ruin this day for her daughter. She wouldn’t allow it. Not her past sins, not this wretched man—nothing. “Where,” she whispered.
“You know the place. The dock. The alley where you killed him. Midnight.”
Before she could agree, he was gone. She wondered if anyone saw him. It was with great resolve she forced her attention back to the ceremony, to the joyous occasion of her Ruth's marriage, but the spot where the gun had jammed into her spine left a burning reminder of what she knew she had to face. The years passed without one attempt to draw her out, to punish her for what she had done. In time, it seemed a dream, something she’d read somewhere, or a distant nightmare. She’d killed a man long ago and now, the debt arrived at her door and demanded to be paid.

If you've ever read a book that touched all of your senses then you'll know what I mean. This is another intriguing work from Patty Wiseman. Bring a box of tissues and a lot of coffee, you're going to be up late reading because you can't stop. A timeless series!
I have been fortunate enough to follow along in Patty's Velvet Shoe Collection from the beginning. An Unlikely Conclusion is the third, and final installment in the series following Ruth and Peter. Their lives have been turned upside down, full of loss, mystery, and intrigue. I love the way Patty balances romance and mystery, always reaching a new level of excellence. I'm not often interested in the historical genre, but this collection is an obvious exception. The author is a natural story teller and the love for what she does comes through loud and clear.
I was sad to see the Velvet Shoe Collection come to an end, but Patty did a fabulous job wrapping up the amazing story. I wait in anticipation for the next Patty Wiseman novel!
