Getting the job done
The language of urban lit is exciting. The most recent book I’ve read in that genre is by Denise Coleman. Shattered Innocence II is part of a saga of an extended family in Philadelphia, enwrapped in the dramas of contemporary urban life (“Angel gave him a look that could freeze the sun.”) but with an added, interesting subplot concerning the development of a musical act within the family that has attracted the interest of major record executives in New York City. Ms. Coleman is also a champion of other authors in the urban lit stable, and she generously features their works on her Facebook page. (BTW I've always been a tough grader: three stars is getting the job done!)
