This beautifully written book grabs the heartstrings in the first chapter. A young girl is confronted with her dead mother, the only person in her little world. Chapter to chapter, we follow young Sarah as she is rescued by kind people, time and time again, only to lose them in turn. Then comes romance, followed almost inevitably by new tragedy, and half way into the book, we meet the enemy: Sarah's mother-in-law who refuses to acknowledge her.

I won't give away Sarah's revenge. It's original, and very, very fitting. The writing in this book is technically excellent, with lucid, clear prose, vivid description and lively characterization.

Nothing is perfect, and if this book could be improved it's in a few chapters before the satisfying end. The meticulous, vivid style of much of the book was replaced by a more summary treatment for a while. However, despite this, the story is wonderful, and very well told. Glenda Ivey deserves recognition for her fine writing, and I wish her success, both with this book and in the future.
