So much to talk about
Sgt Major Tom Crane is helping DI Derek Anderson police the streets of Aldershot on a Saturday night. He finds himself watching the young very drunk girls staggering around in tiny little dresses and high heels a bit too much worse for wear and has the thought “They asking for it”. However these thoughts are going to come back to haunt him as on the Monday morning, he and Sgt Billy Williams are called to DI Andersons’ office as a girl has been found raped and drugged and these thoughts will continue to haunt him when one of his own also becomes a victim of the rapist.

The rapist is spiking the girls’ drinks and because he looks like he’s just helping them get home safely after a night of excess drinking, he’s getting away with it.

Sgt Billy Williams is approached by a young soldier telling him that he’s been repeatedly raped by someone in his unit. It takes time and persuasion to get him to report and lay a charge against the man.

I only want to whet your appetite by giving the briefest review of the story. What I do want to do though is to encourage you to read this powerful, gut-wrenching story. We all think about rape as something that happens to women. How wrong we are. This despicable act is used to control people regardless of whether they’re male or female, young or old, dressed flashy or plain.

Wendy Cartmell has bravely taken on a subject that happens – possibly more often than we’d like to believe. She’s created real people suffering real pain as a result of what’s happened to them and if I can, I’d like to encourage Book Clubs to read this book because there is so much depth to it. Another Engaging Read
Another great novel in the Sgt. Major Crane series, Honour Bound sees the detective on new ground as he investigates two cases of rape. I thought the author dealt with the difficult subject matter well, detailing realistic points of view from the victims, families and detectives alike, and ensuring her characters conducted open and honest conversations. The same care is given in the portrayal of Crane’s home life, as he and his wife struggle with the demands of a new baby. All this made for truly thought-provoking reading, and another engaging case.
