Wir shot an arrow to the left of the group. It flew forward and pierced the wall of a house down the street, forcing an upcoming mercenary to take cover.
"Enemies!" Wir shouted.
Rigil and Hersey took refuge behind the house's stone wall. Arina and Davello hid behind a collapsed wooden staircase as Wir fired off a couple more arrows until he too hid behind another house's wall. Several foes marched up the street towards them, flanking by the dozens from in between every house. They shot up the street and arrows pelted the stones all around them as the guards all ducked for cover.
Wir sighed. Every time he tried to lean out of cover, an arrow would almost fly into him. He couldn't get a shot off edgewise.
Hersey must have dropped his weapon sometime during the fight and forgot to pick it back up again. He looked at Rigil who was standing next to him and grabbed the cadet leader by the shoulder. Rigil spun around in response.
"You need to get to the barracks! It's the only place that these sadistic shits haven't penetrated yet!"
"What about you?" Rigil asked.
Hersey grinned, knowing what he would have to do. "Grab your men and go, Rigil. I... I can buy you some time."
He prayed that these cadets would save this city.
