I thought it absolutely fantastic in its usability and breadth. I'm a novelist who recently began ebook self-publishing. I've figured out some of the basics but this book maps a gazillion new pathways onward and upward.
I've found nothing to compare to this manual in clarity, range of topics and dip-in-ability. Ashton's been generous in offering this amount of research so affordably to ebook self-publishers at all levels. Written in a readable, friendly style too.

Obelisk Seven

If novels are structured like plays, then Obelisk Seven is the play where you spend all of the interval anxious, waiting to know what is going to happen, discussing the possible ending with your friends and resenting any distractions such as the overpriced wine you're drinking.

The novel is fast paced yet deals with three overlapping and complex plots without feeling cumbersome - global warming, ancient Egyptian civilisation and carbon eating 'bugs' destroying the world's oil reserves all come together pretty seamlessly. There's some good characters who you can't help but wish were your friends, and the chance to explore Europe as they go all over the place investigating the mystery of ancient Egyptian obelisks sending out bizarre radio signals. I won't walk past the obelisk on Embankment again without thinking of this book!!!

I also really liked the ideas in this book on global warming and how to combat it, and sort of found myself wishing that we DID have programs on Saturday night television debating these issues, as the X-Factor style popular TV program that this book imagines is something the UK and other countries really needs to have. I also loved the insight into ancient Egypt and into how its artifacts like obelisks were taken to countries in Europe.

Despite its exploration of some heavy issues, this novel is still good escapist thriller action - an impressive achievement. Read it if you want to learn, think, be challenged and at the same time enjoy a very good, un-put-down-able story.


Silent Lips

Reading Silent Lips by Glenn Ashton is like getting on a train heading up a long mountain. The suspense builds and builds until you reach the top and then swoops down into a very surprising ending. The level of detail involved in describing the battle against a plague-like virus attacking New York City is amazing and it feels like you are there in the laboratories and treatment rooms as well as in the highest offices in the land.
Beware that this book can keep you up well past your bedtime. The complexity almost demands a consistent dedication to finishing the book. Then you want to start over to make sure you understand the underlying science, but it's not really a necessity that you do, as it is just a very fine read.
It is definitely an amazing first book and I look forward to other books by this author.
