I figured this would be just another run-of-the-mill day, but I would be wrong about that. By night’s end, the lives of three people would be fractured or destroyed.
Countless times we’ve heard of this happening, but always to someone else, never to ourselves. One presents a portion of themselves that’s never been given before, that enigmatic and subtle part that only another can damage, a roadmap to one’s kill zone if you will, the heart; and yet, one fears not the damnation that can undeniably follow. Discontent can consume one’s life when the desire for something is not met. It is the need for that which we cannot have; whereas, the need for that which is heartily accessible is greed. Entangled amid this insatiability lies the muddled saga of Charlie and Dora. No innocence will be found here . . . no redemptive acts . . . no second chances.

My name is Max, which is sort of a humdrum name, so I answer to most anything. “Hey you” seems to work fairly well, and I’m partial to it because that’s the moniker Charlie always directed my way. Most of my life, wherever I was, whatever I was doing, when I heard that baritone proclamation of “Hey you,” I knew it was Charlie Sinclair.
We met on the little league baseball fields of our youth and were pretty good players, but Charlie had flair about him. We all looked the same -- well, sort of -- but as we matured. Charlie developed into that tall, dark, and handsome looking fella that so many of the ladies craved. And that flair he had in his youth meandered into the pinnacle of coolness, poise, and self-assuredness that I’ve never seen again in a man. As a matter of fact, he maintained that level of audaciousness all his life, right up until the night he was murdered.
