Caitlin grabbed a sponge and began wiping off the stove and counter, now anxious to get out of there. When she was finished she grabbed her things, preparing to leave.
“Wait, Caitlin.” Denver whirled around to face her, wiping his hands on a dish towel. “I want to talk to you about something first.”
“Denver, drop it.”
“No. I feel trouble, I’m telling you. You can’t see it.”
She couldn’t believe it. Denver’s track record with women was abysmal, yet here he stood, lecturing her.
“I mean, what exactly is he after?” Denver considered Caitlin’s prime piece of property for a moment, and wondered if perhaps Chris’ builder friend might be hoping to scoop it up, to put in a subdivision or something. The developers had hounded Caitlin’s aunt for years to give it up.
Caitlin suddenly laughed a little, despite feeling insulted. “You know, this is all completely ridiculous; I’m leaving.”
“Look Caitlin, I’m really worried about you.” Denver followed her out to the hall.
“Well don’t be, you’re not my father.”
“Look.” He shut his eyes momentarily, as if what was coming was difficult for him. “Obviously, this guy has totally floored you. And I don’t blame you. I know you have… problems, okay? I’ve just never asked about it because I felt like you’d tell me, if you ever felt like it.”
He knew. It was more obvious then than she imagined. So that was it, he was acting the mother hen because he felt sorry for her. “You’re right; I don’t want to talk about it.”
“It just feels predatory to me, the whole thing. I know you, Caitlin, and this guy is not part of your world. I don’t like him; he doesn’t seem real to me. I’m just trying to warn you, Caitlin; and I wish to God I didn’t have to. I hate interfering in people’s lives.”
“If you’re so anxious to be useful, then get that guy out to look at the leaking pipes, before I dig them up myself.” She allowed the screen door to slam shut behind her and he didn’t try to follow.
