As the young freshman of Bishops High School entered the gleam of polished hallways, the buzz of human chatter inundated his ears. It was suffocating; sickening. And Patrick was burning hot, on fire. He moved calmly to the left, suppressing that fire, down the hallway lined with student work and bulletins about The Snow Ball Dance and Winter Sports Sign-up.
He made a move with his eyes. But the others were not watching. Their eyes did not meet his. Nobody suspected a thing.
The sweat oozed from Patrick's brow and armpits. His heart hammered, but he drifted nonetheless, a phantom of the halls, and then he stopped.
He entered the restrooms down from the music hallway. The early morning practice of percussion and string instruments whispered through the walls. The bathroom was smelly and damp. A faucet that had never been fixed continued to drip

drip
But the bathroom was empty. Patrick closed the door on the stall and removed his backpack. He took a shallow breath before finding the zipper. The time was near. Mr. Stimone would soon be proud. When Patrick had the front pocket unzipped, he stared, for a moment, admiring.
