Review: A Wonderful Creative Offering

A wonderful creative offering, “Goddess Grimoire Journal, a Collection of Simple Prose and Spells” by B. Melusine Mihaltses, is an abundantly diverse collection of poems, Pagan spells, invocations and incantations for Goddess worshipers and Wiccans. I think all Pagans will find this book to be a Gem as it is also beautifully structured to allow readers a place to document their own spell workings and spiritual journey. The author provides numerous inspirations with her lovely intuit art images scattered tastefully within its creation. I particularly love her images of Persephone on page 69, Hathor on page 45, Oya on page 63 and another image on page 126. I only wish these were presented in color and not just in black and white. Numerous Deities from different pantheons are invoked in the author’s incantations and it’s quite beautiful like; “Gaia, a living Goddess” on page 43, and “Her Journey at Samhain,” page 233. And there are Priestess and Sabbats invocations and every astrological Lunation has a dedicated incantation. The writing here is also not just simple prose as the title would have you believe. No, some of these incantations and poems are quite sophisticated and very moving and I appreciate that this author chose not to dictate to her readers how to implement the use of these poems and spells. They are simply presented and it is up to the reader to extrapolate how to best incorporate these in personally crafted spell workings. In this way it does seem, as the author intended it to be, a collaborative Book of Shadows.
Each chapter begins with a reflective question to allow readers a chance to pause, contemplate and document their thoughts on the subject at the onset of every chapter like; defining a personal tradition for yourself, defining what we personally seek in a lover, defining what is our ideal home, job, prosperity, what motherhood and the maiden personally looks like, the ethics of hexerai, and our personal lunar connection preferences, and many more thoughtful questions.
The author states that this book was originally meant as a companion to her first book, “Gathering for Goddess, a complete manual for Priestessing Women’s Circles.” I can see how this book would be a perfect gift for members of an established group or coven working together, almost becoming like a book of Pagan liturgy in a sense.

Overall, I think this is a lovely book, worthy of much accolades and it is ambitious (and quite generous) in its premise. It is a three in one book;
• a wonderful collection of Pagan poetry,
• a journal to pen your answers to thought provoking questions and
• a place to document your spell-workings as a Modern-day Book of Shadows/Grimoire
The structure and premise of “Goddess Grimoire Journal” is very appealing and I am considering picking up a copy for each and every woman in my group. Five stars for a refreshing new book offering to the Pagan Community!!!
