Excerpt
Angel started to gather up her purse and sweater, but Bill intervened. “Are you leaving so soon? Eat and run?” Angel looked flustered and he wished he hadn’t sounded so flippant. “I…guess you have a busy day at home.”
“Not really,” Angel said.
“Then why don’t you stay, come out on the boat. I did promise you some fishing.”
Angel hesitated. She was of two minds, one was to go home so she could devour the information that Bill had given her, and to dream of her retreat taking form, and the other was to take a deep breath and just go with it. She went with it. “I didn’t think you meant today, but yeah, I’d love to.”
“We can’t count on the weather holding for too long. Better make hay while the sun shines…or better put, get the fishing done now.”
Angel laughed again. He was always putting his foot in his mouth it seemed to her, never knowing how she would take what he said. He was a cautious sort when it came to women, she could tell that. Almost as if someone, some woman had always been on the defensive with him, maybe his ex wife? Someday she would like to hear the story of how that marriage played out, that is if she ever got that close to Bill Canton to get personal.
“I can’t stay out too long, my daughter is in school and although I don’t mind her being home alone for a short period of time, I don’t like to leave her alone too long.”
“I understand, we’ll make this a quickie.” Was that a blush he saw cross Angel’s face? It seemed that whatever he said today it was turning sexual, and he really didn’t mean it to sound that way. “We can fish for about an hour, is that okay?”
Angel, glad he had made another turn around from his quickie remark, quickly replied, “That sounds just about right.”
“Okay then.” Bill rubbed his hands together while standing before her as if he was anxious to get going. “I’ll just go out and gather some gear and you can trail along if you’d like.”
It wasn’t long before they were walking down a wood’s path. Ahead, Angel could see the lake water sparking in the sun. It dazzled her eyes and she donned her sunglasses.
They walked out to the boat and Bill asked Angel to climb aboard. He untied the ropes bounding the boat to the dock and jumped in. Angel was seated across from him as he started the motor and chugged out slowly. “Low water here, we’ll soon be into deeper.”
It was peaceful just chugging along; the afternoon sun was high in the sky and warm on Angel’s face. It brought back old sailing days to mind, she and Jake, Rachael, and later Mae as well. But this was not a day for reminiscing, so she settled back and went with the flow.
