A surreal narrative of past lives and mystic powers.
In this sequel to Taylor's Roamer of Planes (2011), a Polish immigrant named Stephan no sooner gets off the plane in
America than his baggage is searched, his in-country contacts turn out to be worthless, and he's first questioned by
Immigration Services, then imprisoned as a result of what Stephan is certain is a misunderstanding. His prison cell
represents only a mild inconvenience for Stephan, who is a meditative soul adept at projecting his spirit body or astral
self out of his physical body; he often comments in the course of his adventures that the human body is a far more
effective prison for most people than the walls of a cell. Stephan also remembers some of his many previous lives, as do
most of the characters in Taylor's novel, which is energetic but murky (a translator, Salacz, is credited, which might
explain some of this opacity). Characters such as earnest worker Oliver or wise Samuel help to flesh out a narrative full
of supernatural powers and past lives, liberally intermixed with philosophical asides on Taylor's part. His characters
weave their ways through the ordinary world of retail jobs, police precincts and court hearings, half in everyday reality
and half in an astral realm where past lives mingle with present lives. In that alternate realm, they have different
priorities: "I usually hunt creatures whose souls are about to die," Oliver thinks at one point. "Sometimes you need to
trap them because this is the only way you can catch them." Running under those priorities are the novel's philosophical
underpinnings of reincarnation and enlightenment: "You'll only become enlightened and omniscient when you are able
to become one with this inner self," goes one such interruption by Stephan. "This may take a long time." The book bears
little similarity to Taylor's earlier work, so readers can pick up this installment without worrying about catching up.
Although the plot is more than a little shaggy, readers may find this an exotic, fast-paced ride.
