Imagining, Believing & Taking Action
There are many ways to bring about change. Here’s a simple technique you can try that requires only three steps: 1) imagining, 2) believing, and 3) taking action.
1) Imagining
Let your mind wander as you explore the possibilities for living the kind of life you want. What would you like to accomplish? Where would you like to be in five years from now or ten? What will your motivations be? Which kinds of people would you like to be surrounded with? For now, don’t try to limit your thoughts. Rather, imagine a wide range of possibilities. You can narrow down your ideas later.
2) Believing
This is your life we’re talking about, not somebody else’s life. If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will. There’s nothing more satisfying than following your dreams. Even if you’ve tried something before and it’s gone awry, there are always related options to explore. So keep believing.
3) Taking Action
Start that engine and begin taking the kinds of actions that intuitively feel right to you. It takes effort to achieve goals, even if you’re an Einstein. The actions you take may not bring you to precisely where you imagined, but they will take you in the right direction. Think of yourself as a hunter and gatherer who must find the necessary resources to achieve something that will nourish your soul. If you don’t have all the skills to accomplish your goals, determine what you will need to do to get them.
Sometimes people consider only dichotomies: I must do this or that. However, there is no reason why a person cannot accomplish more than one thing at a time. Of course, a person may pursue money, power, or fame. However, try to see beyond these superficial aims and instead focus on how your actions might bring you a feeling of deeper satisfaction. Keep in mind, however, that getting from point A to point B in life is almost never a linear process. Inevitably there will be detours. Even so, it’s useful to consider the three-step process of imagining, believing, and taking action as this can help us move efficiently toward our aims.
Imagining is often the easiest task. Believing, well, that requires faith in yourself (imagine yourself as your own personal cheerleader: “Go, go, go! You can do it!”) Taking action is perhaps the hardest task. Sometimes it takes a while to get the ball rolling, but once it begins to roll, keep following your smile. It’s your best guide to what you really want to do.
Exercise: Take out three pieces of paper. Label the top of each as follows: 1) Imagining, 2) Believing, and 3) Taking Action. On the first page, Imagining, let your thoughts take wind. Don’t edit your ideas or dwell on potential problems. Rather, let yourself engage in a stream-of-consciousness as you explore possibilities for the future. When you’re finished, circle the one or two possibilities that make you smile. These are things your inner self wishes to pursue. On the second page, Believing, write a brief letter to yourself describing why you have faith in the ideas you’ve imagined. List any doubts you have but don’t get bogged down by them. Think about the friend you saw in the mirror (you). What does he or she want to do? What would make this person happy? Finally, on the third page, Taking Action, outline in as much detail as you can the steps you need to take. Does achieving your goal require getting more education? A new job? Some other change? Be as specific as possible. Needless to say, for this three-step process to work, you must be ready to follow through.
