Part 3 of the Seekers Trilogy sees our ‘Seekers of Light’ travelling back across the waters to their homeland, and picks up immediately from the events in ‘The Stuff of Stars’.
Orah and Nathaniel are joined by many others on their return voyage to their homeland, Kara and Caleb represent the Technos and the Greenies from the other land, and represent those that have come with the Seekers to see their home, the land of the Vicars, and the Keep. They have come with them to see if they can help with the fight against the darkness, but also to help with the progress of the other land, and to get ideas of how to help themselves. With a good exchange of knowledge, there is the chance to set up trade.
However (without giving away too many spoilers), what they return to is not what they left. The Vicars and Deacons have risen in their absence, striking against the keep and technology. This story becomes a battle of values, and although originally it was a battle fought through fear on one side and virtue on the other, now it has become a much different beast. Now both sides have access to technology, to weapons, now it is not just about values.
Litwack again uses his characters in this book in a compelling, and masterful way to tell his story, letting them not only be the heroes and villains, as he has in the other volumes, but also tell the emotional tale. Litwack weaves a stunning tale of the emotional impact the journey has on Orah and Nathaniel, how it has changed them from the innocent young girl she was in the first book, to the strong leader she is now, and from the young boy he was in to the warrior Nathaniel has become, willing to not only fight for his beliefs, but to kill to defend those he loves. Litwack explores both his main characters and the terrible toll being a Seeker has taken. It is a beautifully written story, with such elegant prose and language.
Litwack has also taken the time to generate a beautiful landscape for his story to take place in, with wonderful detail that allows you to fully immerse yourself into his world as you read.
This is a wonderful conclusion to a truly remarkable series. It is easily comparable to the works of Wyndham’s ‘The Chrysalids’, or John Christopher’s ‘The Tripods’ series, or several other series of a similar vain. The difference with this series is that David Litwack writes with such beautiful language, making these books so easy, and such a pleasure to read. This is one of those special series that only come along every now and then, and should not be missed.

Orah and Nathaniel have returned home from across the ocean with some of their new friends they made while there. They are happy to be home finally and to see their parents and old friends. But upon their arrival they find that their home has been turned upside down by the Vicars once again. Everything that they set right before leaving their home behind has been usurped.
The Vicars have gone back on their word and have the people back under their rule. The people have been humble into believing the lies they have spread to get them to follow them once again. Not only have the Vicars made the people afraid again but their dearest friend since childhood Thomas has disappeared and of course Orah and Nathaniel went not rest until they find him and put their world back to the way it was.
So Orah and Nathaniel with their friends and family backing them set out to put the Vicars back in their place and make them leave the people alone. They are seekers of the truth and will stop at nothing to get the truth to the people so that their people can lead a life of freedom without fear and do the things they love.
Can Orah and Nathaniel talk some sense into the Vicars and make them see reason? Or will they have to go to war and loses lots of them friends lives in battle? Can they make them see the truth before it is too late? How many lives will be lost before they find truth? Will they lose their selves to the Darkness? Or will the Vicars see the Light?
I have really and truly love this journey with Orah, Nathaniel, Thomas, the people of Little Pond, the Dreamers, the Greenies and all the other characters of The Seekers it has been a wonderful journey one that I am going to miss. Orah and Nathaniel’s journey has been one of interest to me as I am a Seeker myself. I have been searching for the truth for a while now and was kinda/sorta hoping they would find it. Will they ever find the truth? Will anyone?
If you have not read The Light of Reason then let me suggest that you do. It is more than a story. It is more like a story within a story if you know what I mean. But I would like to suggest that you start with the first book The Stuff of Stars and then the next book in the series The Children of Darkest just so you get the whole story and know what is going on and what Orah and Nathaniel are seeking.

The Light of Reason is the third book in David Litwack's The Seekers series, (The Children of Darkness and The Stuff of Stars being the first two) and it continues the series' trend of well-written, dystopian science fiction with wonderfully-developed characters and a unique mood.
We re-join our heroes, Orah and Nathaniel, as they return from their adventure across the ocean. The childhood friends immediately notice that their home is not how they left it. They learn that the Vicars have broken the truce and are rallying against technology and The Keep, threatening the stability and viability of their homeland. With Orah and Nathaniel having just returned from the realm of the Technos and the Greenies with machines and hoping to broker an alliance, they find their plans substantially set back. With an old friend missing and some new friends in tow, Orah and Nathaniel set out to once again set things right in their homeland and to (hopefully) bring an end to the darkness once and for all. Twists and turns abound in this dramatic third act, and without giving away too much, the ending will more than satisfy long-time fans of the series.
The dark mood from the first books returns, and while the protagonists' victories are at-times short-lived, they never become uninteresting or demoralizing. The characters that are developed throughout these three novels live in a melancholy world, but ultimately persevere despite it. The depth of characterization, the beautiful phrasing & word choices and the dramatic action mix together to form a truly unforgettable experience. The pacing is appropriate and the author handles action and dialogue with skilled precision. The conflicts of man vs. man and man vs. machine are well developed, and the dichotomy of values ascribed to technology and the lack thereof from the first two books remains intact.
This is another fantastic read from David Litwack and is a tremendous addition to an already amazing series. The Light Of Reason is easily a 5-Star read.
