The search for truth has driven people to seek answers to the big questions since the beginning: Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? Is there a God? Who is God? What does He want? These questions are so fundamentally important that every person in every culture that has ever existed has pondered them at some point. These questions will form the foundation of your worldview, and your worldview will ultimately guide how you live all aspects of your life. The big questions are undeniably important.
These big questions cannot be answered without seeking God. Many people, like my young atheist student, have decided there is no God before even looking for Him. These people are overpowered by lies and never take the opportunity to consider the truth of Jesus Christ.
This book is an attempt to rationally present the truth of God, Jesus and the Bible. This is not because these truths are somehow in the dark or hidden from view, but because they are, as they have always been, competing with non-truths that have echoed through history with a loud and appealing voice that continues to this very moment.
Christian apologist G.K. Chesterton wrote about his journey to find the truth of God and compared it to a man who set sail from England, and through some navigational error, discovered England under the impression that it was a lost island in the South Pacific. His point was, of course, the absurdity of discovering something that has already been discovered; of thinking you’re the first person to arrive only to find that you are the last. He expanded his point to describe the foolishness, and the joy, of finding a truth that has always existed. He described this search for the truth as a quest to arrive ten minutes ahead of the truth, only to discover he was 1800 years behind it.
The conclusion we can draw from Chesterton’s essay is that most people, if not all, have searched for answers to the big questions of life, and the blessed among them are the ones who discover, in their own foolishness, that the truth is found where it has always been - in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Lee Strobel wrote the bestselling book, The Case for Christ, after launching an investigation to disprove the authenticity of Jesus, the Bible, and the resurrection. In his quest to find a new truth, he was fortunate enough to find the only truth, and produce a work that builds a strong case for the deity of Christ. If he felt at the end of his journey that he had foolishly discovered an already discovered country, like Chesterton describes, then he surely had the equivalent joy of realizing he was not lost in a sea of uncertainty after all, but standing on the firm shores of home.
There are many other examples throughout history and in modern times of those who looked closer at the Christian faith for the purpose of finding the apparent errors, only to find the error was in themselves. Usually these seekers are helped along the way by Christians who have taken the following verse as their purpose and mission.
And always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you.
