Melanie felt cold as the fear entered her bloodstream causing her limbs to freeze and her mind to enter a state where everything around her slowed down. She no longer felt afraid and only a strange feeling of calm remained.
She didn’t seem to realise that the vehicle had stopped and that the second man was shouting something at her, and waving the gun around. His voice echoed in the distance like it was lost within the canyons of a vast mountain range, capable of being heard, but not directed at her.
She lay back on the seat of the car and looked directly at him. In the dim light she could see the uncertainty in his eyes and sense his hesitation, intensified by her direct gaze. She could sense his fear and read his thoughts through the exposed gateway to his dark soul. The message was clear.
She closed her eyes.
A single shot went off in the restricted confines of the car.
There was a deafening sound for a split second. A blue flash illuminated the darkness in the car’s interior as the bullet left the barrel.
