A Word from the Author I came up with the idea for Tusk when I saw on the news how scientists are mixing dead woolly mammoth DNA with modern day elephant DNA in hopes of bringing a new creature to life! I started thinking about the ice age and the people who lived in that time period. I thought a lot about the woolly mammoth and how massive this great beast was and then I thought about how cool it would be to ride one! Then I went a step further! How cool would it be to have a woolly as a pet? Did ice age kids have pets? Why not a friendly woolly? Elephants are very smart so I figured woolly mammoths would have been brainy too. This Story Has Everything!
For younger readers, this adventure story about two prehistoric kids left to fend for themselves after their tribe migrates to another region simply rocks. Faced with substantial adversity in the form of saber-toothed lions, a hostile environment, and an unfolding prophecy they're not properly equipped to deal with, this story has everything a young reader--or even an older one, such as myself--could ask for. Gripping!
I know this story's for younger readers, but I couldn't put it down! It's gripping and like nothing I've ever read. It doesn't take long to identify with the kids, and parts of the book are truly scary (ever tried hiding from a cave bear?) - very realistic! Have you ever wondered what life was really like way back then before civilization?
