It is fast paced and hard to put down as Lieutenant Ditano and Marcus Robinson try to find a killer. But they too are after the Wrong guy.
Excerpt
When he got to the precinct he asked the girl behind the desk for Sergeant Popovich. He was given a visitor’s badge and directed to the third floor where he found Popovich in a nondescript cubicle reading the newspaper. Daryl wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do so he just stood there until the sergeant looked up from his paper and eyed him suspiciously.
“Can I help you?”
“Lieutenant Ditano told me to see you. I’m Daryl Collins.”
“Oh yeah,” said the sergeant, putting the paper aside and standing up. “He left me a note about you. Said you might be in. Sit down and tell me about it.”
Daryl sat down and recounted the night’s events for a second time. When he finished, Popovich led him to a little conference room and had him sit down while he brought in the mug books.
“Just relax and take your time. If you find anything just sit them aside and I’ll be in to check on you. You want some coffee or something?”
“No, I’m good.”
After the sergeant left, Daryl began going through the stack of binders. As he looked through the photos he wondered what each subject had done to find his way into the collection. His description of the young men had narrowed the sergeant’s selection of binders and all of the faces staring up at him looked fairly similar. As he leafed through them Daryl shivered. He was sure that he didn’t want to meet any of these men in a dark alley.
He found the first young man, the one with the case of booze, in the second book. He was nearly to the bottom of the stack though before he discovered the shooter. There weren’t any names or other information and Daryl was sitting there staring at the two men when the Sergeant came back in.
“Any luck?” he said.
“Yes, I found them.”
“Both of them?”
Daryl nodded.
“Excellent!”
The sergeant sat down and turned the two books towards him and Daryl pointed to the two pictures.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Positive? I mean after awhile…”
“They all start to look alike?”
“Something like that.”
“I was only a few feet away from them. The corner was brightly lit. I watched them kill one of your officers and then point the gun at me. No, sergeant, that’s not something I’d be likely to forget.”
The Sergeant sat back and nodded.
“Well I guess we’ll take it from here. Did Ditano say if he’d be getting back to you?”
“He said he’d call me tonight.”
“Well then there you go. Thanks for coming in. I’m sure it wasn’t an easy thing to do under the circumstances but without people like you we wouldn’t be able to do our jobs.”
As Daryl drove back home he took a different route. He just wanted all this to be over. Unfortunately it was only beginning.
After Collins left, Popovich called Ditano. He could tell from the groggy response that the lieutenant had been asleep.
“Sorry about waking you up, Dave, but Collins just left.”
“Any luck?”
“Good news and bad news. The good news is he picked them both out and gave a positive ID.”
“And the bad news?”
“He picked out T Rex and Spike Two.”
“You’re kidding.”
“I’m not sure whether to be happy or not.”
Ditano sighed.
“Well the price of poker just went up. Does anyone else know?”
“Just the two of us at this point.”
“Good. Leave it that way. I’ll be in early this afternoon. We’ll talk about it then.”
“No one would like to finally get those two more than me.”
“Most of the guys in the precinct would probably challenge you on that but I know what you mean. I don’t want to blow this one Jake.”
