Everyone enjoys playing at espionage, he thought. We’re just big kids all our lives.
As he turned away from the bank of phones and headed back toward the parking lot he saw a face in the crowd that was familiar.
It was Ronnie MacKenzie, a goofy sort of guy that ran errands for Stan and other people. Carl had never spoken to him and had never been involved in anything with him. Ronnie was four or five years older than Carl and of no interest to him. But, they each knew who the other was. Ronnie probably even knew that Carl (Wolf) had been spending time meeting with Stan in the last few months.
Their eyes met and there was recognition. Carl let his eyes slip away and passed Ronnie and hurried on his was. He almost expected to hear “Wolf! Fancy meeting you. What are you doing in Detroit?” or some similar expression of surprise. But there was nothing said and Carl was happy to get away without explanation.
In fact, Carl wondered what Ronnie was doing in Detroit. He wasn’t important enough to be meeting anyone of significance, or even to be sent as a messenger.
For a moment his hyperactive defense instincts caused him to wonder if Stan was checking up on him.
