It was only to be a vacation -- a two-week respite from her work, and a chance to visit with friends. But when a young widow named Jennifer Marlowe takes a trip to Manchester, England to visit old chums, the plans change. Instead of touring the city of Manchester, she ends up in the Scottish Highlands where she will meet a tall Scot with haunted eyes, whose bitterness toward God touches her heart and life. The story line is told through the eyes of both Jennifer and the ‘tall Scot’ named James ‘Mac’ MacAndrew. As we learn about his past and what has caused the inner turmoil in his life, we are drawn further into the story. Interwoven between the pages are the supporting characters, each helping to add love, laughter and spice to this modern-time love story.
Excerpt
Jamie sighed. “Tis a lonely place out here during a winter storm. And it was nice to have someone here when I returned -- even if it was to a darkened house.” He chuckled and Jennifer found herself smiling too. Suddenly she felt more relaxed with him.
“Well, looks like it could be a long night,” he said quietly through the semi-darkness.
She nodded and wondered if this would be a good time to talk to Jamie about his past. Perhaps the dark atmosphere might make him feel more like talking. All she could do was try.
“Jamie, may I ask you something?”
His voice was deep as it echoed around the darkened room. “Of course. What’s on yer mind?”
Jennifer paused a moment, wondering if he would think she was nosy. Hopefully, he would understand the real reasons for her questions.
“Mary and Daniel told me you almost went into the ministry. Is that true?”
It was quiet for a moment, and then Jamie’s voice came to her from across the room. “At one time in my life I thought that was my calling.”
“What happened to change your mind?”
She heard him give a big sigh. “It’s too complicated to easily explain to you. All I can say is that a mixture of circumstances and feelings made me decide that’s not what fate had in store for me.”
Jennifer frowned. ‘Fate’ Not once had Jamie mentioned God or his relationship with Him. “Has your relationship with God changed since that time?”
She heard a slight snicker and wondered if he were laughing. She felt like their conservation wasn’t going at all where she had wanted it to.
"God and I came to an understanding. I don’t ask Him for anything, and He doesn’t bother me.”
The sharp pain that went through Jennifer at his words was almost physical, and she felt like crying. What intense bitterness was in his voice.
Oh, Jamie, I’m so sorry you feel that way.”
“Don’t feel sorry for me, Jenny. Life isn’t perfect for most people.” He was silent for a moment as she tried to pray about him. What could she say to make him understand how much God loved him? Then he spoke again.
“Once upon a time I felt God really cared about me and my future. All that changed one day. I don’t expect anything anymore.” His voice had such a detached sound to it, and he sounded so vulnerable.
Jennifer closed her eyes instinctively. Father, this man has been hurt -- not by You, I know. Something has happened to draw him away from You and harden his heart. Touch his soul and bring him
back to You. I know You still love him every bit as much as you did before. Jennifer said her silent ‘amen’ and sighed. The human side of her wanted to rush about fixing people’s lives. God continually had to remind her that He was in control. She needed to learn to wait on His timing.
She suddenly yawned, and she dimly saw Jamie smile at her through the darkness.
“Am I that boring?”
Jennifer shook her head. “No, no I’m sorry. I’m just so tired. It’s been a long day, but I don’t want to go up to bed. It’s dark and cold upstairs.”
“I can have Cam get a fire going in your room, if he hasn’t done it already. But better still, why don’t you lay down on the sofa here and if Daniel calls, you’ll be here to get the news.”
She nodded. Sounded like a good plan and right now she was so tired she wasn’t going to argue. She went over, slipped off her shoes, and then laid down on the sofa with her head cuddling into the pillow. Jamie stood over her, a heavy coverlet in his large arms. He placed it gently over her, pulling it down over her legs and feet. She smiled up at him sleepily.
“Thanks, Jamie. I owe you one.”

Endlesss Season
It has been a long time since I was wrapped up in a book, and never with anything close to a romance. I've been a reader of Madeline L'Engle, Frank Herbert, and C.S. Lewis for a long time, and with my employment and children, have found other books difficult to focus on and stay interested in.
(Veggie Tales, Thomas the Tank Engine and the like have encompassed the depth of literature I've read over the past number of years to my children.)
Unfortunately, I came to this book with the same thought, that it would not keep my attention. After reading the prologue and first chapter, I was eager to find a little time, or even a comfortable spot to read while the normal family noises went about around me.
Were I to say anymore, I might divulge too much information about the inner workings and soul searching of devastating losses one can face in one's life.
If you want some reassurance in your life that there is a reason for everything, it's included in the book too.

Endless Season
I just finished this book and was completely entertained . It is nice to find a nice christian love story that one can enjoy without all the sex that people seem to think they need in books. Ruth Kyser did a wonderful job of portraying her christian beliefs and upbringing. I enjoyed how she described the Scottish Highlands and all the characters in the book. A page turner for sure

What a heart warming story. The author has done a wonderful job showing the character and emotions of the individuals in this story. She made the participants come alive as well as showing the inner turmoil and emotions they possess. If you enjoy Christian romance novels this is a MUST read.
