Alex paused long enough to yell across the roof of the car to Natalie, “Call the fire brigade!” Then he sprinted down the street.
The arsonists were piling back into their car. It took off with a scream of smoking rubber. The horn started hooting before they reached the point where Natalie stood frozen in alarm. Alex halted momentarily but, as the car sped past her, the thugs limited themselves to obscene gestures and catcalls.
Alex breathed a sigh of relief and ran on, hoping he would be in time to salvage Katy’s letters. Party-goers were piling out of the back door as he reached it. He shouldered his way through in the opposite direction, yelling, “Get out of the way.” Flames were licking the frame of the front door and the hallway had a pall of smoke almost down to head level. Suddenly the glass in the door shattered. Alex felt shards hitting his clothing, but with spent force, and he ducked lower and sprinted to his bedroom door.
The paint on its surface was blistering, the edges blackened. He knew he was too late to save Katy’s letters, let alone any of his possessions.
He checked the living room from its doorway to make sure everyone was out. Smoke was starting to fill it as well. He turned back to retrace his steps but a gush of flame erupted from the hallway ceiling, blocking his exit. He had to retreat from the heat, smelling his hair singe.
He panicked for a moment. Then, bent over to avoid breathing-in smoke, he rushed to a window, opened it and in the same movement somehow managed a forward roll onto the grass outside.
