Excerpt

After reading for what seemed like hours, Christine's eyes began to grow weary. Although the book was so revealing and so enthralling that she didn't want to put it down, she was finally forced to lay her head back and rest.
Without any warning at all, the shadows came. At first, she thought that she might be dreaming. They hadn't visited her in such a long time that she was beginning to believe that they were a figment of her imagination. She watched as they curled and twisted in and out amongst each other.
They came through the windows and doors. They formed shapes of animals and of men, as they whispered. Oh, that dreadful whispering. Louder and then softer they whispered as they crept fluidly along the floor. Slowly, they oozed along the walls and the ceiling. Some of them were gray. Some of them were black.
"You don't scare me," Christine said, sitting up in her bed. "You have no power. You were just sent to frighten me. And I will not be afraid."
The shadows continued to whisper as they moved closer and closer. They took more definite forms. Finally, they all twisted together to form a large foreboding shape.
It was the beast that she had seen in the field by the old cemetery. It stood by the bed, arms stretched out toward her. It looked as though it were solidifying. It looked as though it were beckoning her.
"Leave me alone," she said, angrily.
"I will not leave you," the shadow said. Its voice was gravelly and course. The voice slowly rose to a high pitch. It sounded like metal scraping against metal.
"I tell you a secret. You are mine. And I will take you," it said in its horrid whispering screech.
It was the first time the shadows ever spoke to her personally. And it terrified her. She had never heard anything quite that horrifying in her life.
"You're a liar and a murderer," Christine said, her own voice rising. "You have killed too many. I won't let you kill any more. You are done here. You can do no more harm."
The shadows had always whispered. But they were never audible. Yet, this voice, although gruesome was completely distinct. She knew what it was saying. And she wasn't quite sure whether to fight or run. But where was she going to run too?
"I am not done here," the shadow said, in it's horrible screeching voice. "You can't stop me. Nobody can stop me. You are mine. You will serve my purpose."
"Go back. Go back to where you came from. In the name of God and all that is holy, go back." Christine was yelling now.
The shadowy creature like thing shrunk back as if in pain. Then it gathered itself together. It rose up, looming over her bed. It moved closer, ever so slowly. Then it lunged at her. It covered her bed. Then it covered her.
She screamed. "God help me!" she shrieked, as she tried to roll off the bed. But, it was too late. The shadowy beast had already covered her. She felt as though she were in some sort of a void where there was no air. There was nothing there but blackness, so horrifying that it made her feel as though she were already dead.
