The storm broke with a sudden ferocity that caught everyone completely off guard. Valeria clung to Gavin, fearing they would be separated in the darkness. Already screams were erupting around them between the crashing growl of thunder.
“The children,” Arkel cried, his voice nearly lost in the moaning wind. “Casson and Kaida, they’re out there somewhere.”
Valeria’s heart went cold. Dominus must be out there as well, he was nearly inseparable from the two youngest Udall children.
“Get back to the house,” Kiernan said, drawing close so he could be heard. “I’ll look for them.”
“No, I must find my children.” Arkell tried to move away from them, but Kiernan grabbed hold of his arm.
“Think of Johan and Rannin, they need you too. Trust me, I will find Casson and Kaida. I would never let anything happen to my sister’s children.”
Arkell hesitated, then nodded and turned toward his boys. “Come along, boys, let’s get out of the storm.”
“Gavin, the prince.” Valeria looked pleadingly into his eyes. “Please.”
Gavin looked back at her, the corners of his lips pinched. “Stay with Arkell, I’ll help Kiernan find the children.”
She squeezed his arm. “Thank you.”
People were running by in the darkness, confusion and fear were heavy on the air. But there was something else as well. Valeria glanced in the direction of where the fire circle had been and saw only a gray haze in the brief moments of illumination the lightning offered. She sent a silent prayer to Basale to look after Daemon, though it was not in the manner of her people to make such prayers, then she turned to Arkell and slid her arm through his.
“I hope I can find the way back in this . . . madness,” Arkell said, his voice tense.
Valeria watched frantic faces pass them by, pale in the darkness. The night was filled with sight and sound that was confusing and unnerving. “We’ll be fine.” She started to sing, soft and low, as she did when she was a child to entertain herself as she worked in her mother’s garden back home.
She sang them a sunny day, full of flowers and sunshine, feeling her magic work as the music flowed out of her. There was something in the air, something resistant to her magic, but she sang on through it.
