Anna lunged toward the cockpit door and stepped into the cramped space. In the soft green glow of the control panel, Everett struggled with the shuddering controls. “What’s wrong?” she shouted through the mask.
“We’ve got something dead ahead of us,” he barked through his own mask. “I’ve got my hands full keeping us airborne at this speed. I don’t know if I can maneuver around it.”
“What is it?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “It’s not showing up on radar, but it’s closing fast.”
She bent forward and peered out into the night sky. A soft, blue glow ahead of the plane grew larger in the plane’s path. She could make out the shape of a disk.
“Looks like a...,” Everett said. Before he could finish, a brilliant white light flashed from the object and flooded the cockpit. Anna threw her hands to her face and clenched her eyes shut. A muffled thud echoed through the plane. She felt the aircraft tremble then lurch beneath her feet. When she eased one eye open, the cramped interior of the cockpit had gone black. Only the faint glow of starlight filtered through the windows.
“What happened?” Anna screamed.
“Our power’s gone!” Everett yelled. “Electrical systems are dead. Get out of here. Tell everyone to jump.” Anna sensed his panic. “We’re going down.”
The floor dropped beneath her feet, and the huge aircraft surrendered the last of its lift and stalled. She darted back through the door into the eerie darkness of the cabin. Shadowy shapes at the rear of the cabin vanished one-by-one from the rear hatch into the blackness of the night sky.
McCall and David stood frozen in the shadows at the first row of seats sucking on the oxygen masks wide-eyed, panicked, and pale. The angle of the floor grew steeper, and Anna realized the engines had stopped.
