Excerpt
I watched my pup gnaw on the enormous ham bone Megan had given him and wondered if he might grow up like me, a freak with the mind of a human and the body of a Golden Retriever. It would be the last time I would see Wizard for awhile.
My humans were both up early and Ryan was standing on the back porch, looking out at the backyard and waiting for me. I knew he was there, but I ignored him for awhile, content to enjoy my little family before embarking on another assignment. I nudged Charm with my snout while Wizard's brother and sister took turns biting at her fluffy tail as it swished back and forth.
Ryan clapped his hands and said, "Come on Magic. Looks like rain."
Ryan is an FBI agent. He was an active duty Marine when I first met him in Iraq after I escaped from a genetic research lab in Iran where they killed my parents with their crazy experiments. As far as I know, I am the only survivor, and the only dog with human level intelligence. I can't talk as I have the body of a golden retriever along with its vocal cords, but I have learned to communicate by typing on a computer. I use my nails and can send e-mails and, of course, read them. My ability to send e-mails was instrumental in the exposure of a high level bureaucrat who was involved in exporting secret army exoskeletons to Iran and China. A computer hacker I met on the internet helped me implant a spy program in his computer, but that is a long story I won't write about again. Only a few select humans know about my gift—or curse—and that's how I want it.
