Awakening, he feels the flutter of a wind buffeting his skin, tussling his hair.
Opening his eyes, he discovers the blue-hued glow of a dimming twilight.
Above him, a dark sky foments, gathering clouds for a fierce storm while all around him a vast Salt Flat stretches out into the shadows, silent and desolate.
How he got here, or why, he has no memory.
Only then does he realize he's naked, inexplicably curled up in the middle of this stark, bleak expanse like a child, abandoned to an alien world.
Confounded, he climbs to his feet and, leaning into the driving gusts to hold his ground, he peers out into the twilight, just able to make out the black ribbon of a distant mountain range riding the horizon.
But as he stares at it, straining to estimate distance, its crest seems to be moving, undulating ever so slightly.
A crack of thunder booms overhead, sending flashing forks of illuminating lighting into the charcoal twilight, and the mountain range soon reveals itself to be a monumental tidal wave, a thousand feet high and a thousand miles wide, rolling, rampaging inexorably across the plains, devouring the world.
He stares at it, terrified, frozen by its incomprehensible size and overwhelming force.
