And then one day in that summer of 1903, while Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics were battling Jimmy Collins' Boston Puritans for the American League lead and John McGraw's revived New York Giants were challenging the powerful Pittsburgh Pirates for first place in the National League, while Lajoie was recovering his batting stroke following an off-season illness and a handsome young pitcher named Christy Mathewson was gaining fame in New York, the great Delahanty simply disappeared.
It was as if he had vanished from the face of the earth. He walked out on his Washington teammates during a series in Detroit on July 2, and no friend, relative, or fellow ballplayer ever saw him alive again.
. . .[A]s each day passed without word of Delahanty's whereabouts, there was a growing concern over the ballplayer's disappearance. A headline in the Washington Post echoed the question asked not only in that city but throughout baseball: "Where is Del?"
The answer came on July 9, one week after Delahanty first vanished. The horribly mangled body of a man was found just below Niagara Falls on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. . .That man, as investigators soon discovered, was Ed Delahanty, baseball's "King of Swat."
