Becky Corwin-Adams and her husband, Randy, are members of a walking club, the American Volkssport Association. With the "help" of their dogs, they complete a 10-kilometer (six-mile) walk almost every weekend, but that's only the beginning of their walking adventures. Barkley was a buff and white cocker spaniel who loved to walk. We rescued him from Defiance County Humane Society in 1998, when he was two years old. Barkley had very long legs and large paws. He was not the typical cocker spaniel. He also had a long tail that went around in circles when he was happy. Most cocker spaniels have short, docked tails.
We are members of a walking club, the American Volkssport Association. More information is available at www.ava.org. We completed a 10 kilometer (six mile) walk almost every weekend, and Barkley soon started joining us on our weekend walks. A few times, we walked 12 miles in one day, and Barkley didn’t mind. When we went away for a weekend of walking, Barkley went along. He traveled all over Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois to walk with us. Barkley was our first volkssporting dog. We selected him to accompany us on our walks because he was the youngest and largest of our three cocker spaniels. Our vet once remarked that six miles was too far for a person to walk, let alone a dog! Barkley's first volkswalk was in Lima, Ohio, and we attended a walking club picnic and meeting after the walk. Barkley was six years old when he became a volkssporting dog.

Amusing Dog Tales
Becky Corwin-Adams has been a Volksmarcher since 1997, but she's done her share of walking before that date.
Becky had so many stories to tell that she recently released a book about her travels.
Anyone who is considering bringing a dog on their next Volksmarch will find a great deal of advice (and amusing stories) in this book.
There's so much to enjoy in this book that I was glad I read it. I think every AVA member, regardless of your position on dogs, would consider this book a great read.

Fun Read For People Who Walk with Dogs
A book about walking with Cocker Spaniels came across my desk today. Of course I sniffed it and ended up reading about Becky Corwin-Adams dogs who love going on something called a "volkswalk."
Becky wrote about walks in Florida, Nevada, and beyond. It looked like she had a lot of fun even if the spaniels got into some trouble along the way (which she describes in great detail).
A fun read for people who walk with their dogs, do volkswalks, or, like me, just dream about them!
