When a mistaken arrest and a terrifying experience in jail breaks her, only Sara's dreams can help her to recover...
"Why is this so hard for me? Why am I having so much trouble? Why do I feel so helpless, so hopeless? What the hell is wrong with me?"
After tangling with murders and mobsters, not to mention medical school and three years of residency, Sara thought she could handle anything. And then the police show up without warning at her new office and arrest her for a crime she can't possibly have committed. Sara's confidence, and her grip on reality, is shattered during one terrifying night in jail.
Now, the very dreams that have endangered her life and driven her to the edge of madness may be the only thing that can help Sara find herself again...
"Dream Family" is the powerful fourth novel in the "Dreams" series.
Excerpt
The man replies in a flat, emotionless voice, “Sara Alderson?” The temperature in the room seems to drop twenty degrees.
I answer automatically, “That’s me.”
The other officer, the woman, steps closer to me. She isn’t any bigger than I am. But she’s got a uniform. And a gun. “Please put your hands up against the wall, ma’am.”
What? What’s going on? Hands against…
They only tell you to do that when…
I hear Laurie’s voice. It seems very far away. “What’s going on, officers?”
“Hands against the wall,” the woman repeats, and I slowly, carefully do as I’m told.
The man says, in that same flat voice, “Sara Alderson, we have a warrant for your arrest, for the charge of prescription drug fraud.” As he speaks, I feel his partner’s hands on me, patting my chest, feeling inside my coat and down to my pants and then, briefly – I have to force myself not to react – on the inside of my thighs, before going all the way down to my ankles.
The words just now register with me. Prescription fraud? I haven’t even written a prescription yet! This has to be some kind of mistake, or maybe it’s a practical joke gone horribly wrong. Except nobody’s smiling or laughing.
“You have the right to remain silent,” the man goes on, robotically reading the speech I’ve heard a thousand times in movies and on TV. His partner stands right behind me. As he runs through it, my left arm is pulled behind me and – no! No, this isn’t right! She’s handcuffing me!
Cold metal bites into my wrist, and she’s holding my left arm with an iron grip as she pulls my right arm behind me. I’ve never been handcuffed, not as a kid playing cops and robbers, not even with those stupid furry handcuffs Beth had in college. The cuffs are very tight, they’re pinching into my wrists, and I can’t move my hands at all. There’s no chain between the cuffs, they must be directly connected to each other on a hinge or something.
The male officer’s voice trails off; I didn’t hear most of what he said, and now his partner is pulling me along, her iron grip leading me away from my office, away from Laurie, towards…
No. I haven’t done anything wrong. This can’t be happening. I open my mouth, but as I’m being dragged out the door, I register Laurie’s voice. “Sara! Don’t say anything! I’ll get Brian and your parents, we’ll get a lawyer, don’t say a word. You’ll just make this worse!”
Worse? How can it be worse? I’m chained up like a criminal, being taken to – to – I’m going to jail. I didn’t do anything, I’ve never done anything, I’m not a criminal. But the police think I am…
