“I am afraid that we will have to go down a floor below the house level, that is where my son spends his time,” he said to us.
“Let me warn you, life, as you know it is about to change!”
The elevator stopped, and we walked into another hallway as Mr. Farris continued talking to us as we walked down a dark corridor.
We stopped at the end, and a man was standing there guarding the entrance.
“My son lives in here. This has been his room for almost a year now. Nobody goes into his room unless it is a member of my staff like Koch.”
Koch was an enormous man, maybe close to seven feet tall and weighing three hundred pounds or more. Michael looked like a child next to him, as well as Mr. Farris. Koch raised the metal bar off the door and set it against the cold concrete wall. Mr. Farris turned to Michael.
“Michael, please don’t take this the wrong way, but I would prefer you wait out here in the hall with Koch for a few minutes.”
Mr. Farris opened the metal door to his son’s room as I followed with fear as to what I would see and observe.
“It’s just me Juan, your father, and I brought you a new friend.”
The room was dark and had poor light in it and only two small room windows. There was nothing but a commode and small sink in it for his son to use there were mattresses surrounding the large room, screwed or nailed into the concrete wall some way. The smell in there was terrible. It was like the smell of urine.
Mr. Farris took me by the hand leading me over to a king-sized bed where his son lay chained by his arms and legs. It was a pitiful watching another person be held in such a way. As we moved closer, the reason the chains were being used became apparent as the boy lashed out at us.
“Juan, this is Mrs. Walters, or Samantha if you wish to call her by her first name, she is here to help you.”
The boy rattled the chains trying to break free of them and yelled out, “Get the Bitch out of my sight!” and spit at me.
Mr. Farris took me to the other side of the room and whispered to me, “Now you know the reasons why I offered you the monetary payment. Do you think you can help my son and make him free of whatever this thing is that is inside him?”
I looked at him in his eyes and saw tears in them.
“I do not know whether I can help him or not Mr. Farris, but I will stay here today and try. That is the best that I can offer to you right now.”
He hugged me and thanked me for the help and told me the money was already mine anyway for being bold enough to come.
“I was going to give it to you whether you come here or not, Mrs. Walters. You were my last hope, and I had only one option left to take.”
“What other options did you have in mind that were available?”
Mr. Farris looked down at the concrete floor and then back at me again and told me, “I was going to have to kill him, so he would be free from this.”
“I will go outside with Michael, and send Koch in here to help you if you need him, Mrs. Walters.”
As Mr. Farris left me to tell Koch to come in, the boy raised his head off the bed and looked at me. He had this evil look in his eyes as if he wanted to kill me if he could get loose from the chains that bound him. I looked away from him at the other side of the room as I had a fear of this boy. Koch walked into the room sitting down in a chair. I felt much safer with him being nearby me in the room.
