The Kaleidoscope Syndrome: An Anthology, is a collection of poetry, short stories, and other literary works by Dave Matthes, author of "The Slut Always Rides Shotgun", "The Passive Aggressors", "In This House, We Lived, and We Died", and "Sleepeth Not, the Bastard".
Poetic themes Matthes touches upon include prepubescent grit, suicide, existential acceptance, and abstract variances of spiritual reality in which the whole of society feeds upon, drawing inspiration from Jim Morrsion, Bukowski, and life in general.
Included are the opening chapters to one of many scrapped attempts at writing a novel, originally titled "The Kaleidoscope Syndrome", for which this anthology is named after. The last section of this anthology includes the first chapter to the unfinished novel, "The Best Summer of Our Lives", which will be completed and released sometime after Matthes' current novel-in-progress.

I am madly in love with this book. It is raw and simply delicious, the words begging to be read. Dave's style is Bukowski-esque, powerful and raunchy. I can't put it down. Mental orgasms all around. A must read for any word lover

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The Jim Morrison style of this writers poetry makes me question whether or not he is The Lizard King reincarnated. His style though sometimes dark and macabre is also pleasant and humble at times. I enjoy the random blurbs here and there, it gives it an inviting feeling sorta like "read on my friend, many treasures await ahead..."
I enjoyed the sneak peek of his current works "The Best Summer of Our Lives" it was a little snack to indulge on whilst peeking my interest in the final copy of said story.
In all I give this book 5 stars, mostly for the atmosphere reading it created for me. It inspired me to want to put on a record, grab a pen and paper and jot down a some of my own lyrical gibberish.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
