A "space western" flavored novel, with a balance of adventure, romance, and some humor thrown if for good measure.
Pretending to be a man isn’t easy. Finn Colville has pulled it off for years, but things get complicated when she falls for her new bounty hunting partner, Eamon Sullivan. On the planet New Sion, it’s against the law for a woman to wear pants and carry a gun, much less shoot people for a living. What will happen if Eamon discovers her secret?
On a backwater planet, at the edge of a galactic war, one man, one woman, and one desperate alien cross paths. Together they embark on the road trip of a lifetime, bound for revelation and redemption.
Excerpt
As she rode up, Finn could see the men now had the alien subdued. A big fellow jammed his double-barreled shotgun under the Krell’s jaw, and another man was slipping a knotted rope over his head. The prisoner’s hands were lashed behind him, and he was backed against the trunk of a sweetbark tree. It looked like this was going to be a hanging.
The Krell was shorter and stockier than most of the men. His skin was a stunning shade of golden green that reminded Finn of juvenile shiners. He had a feathery black crest on his head, and his eyes were as yellow as a hill devil’s. The shape of his face was similar to a Human’s only more triangular, with a large brow, and small, pointed chin. His nose was wide and flat, with thin slits for nostrils.
Finn was struck by his regal posture. Despite his bondage, he held himself straight and proud, his chin up and his eyes blazing. He stared off at the horizon as if the men around him did not exist.
Eamon fired two shots in the air, which effectively got everyone’s attention. Finn rode right and leveled her gun at the gathered men.
“What’s going on here?” Eamon’s words carried across the silent yard. His rifle rested easy in his hands.
“Who the hell are you?” shouted one of the men, reaching for his gun.
“Don’t!” Eamon commanded, bringing his rifle around. There was an edge of steel in his voice that made the other man stop. The fellow took his hand away from his gun belt.
“I’d rather not shoot anyone,” Eamon said, “but I will if I have to. The same goes for my partner.” The six men looked warily from him to Finn and back again. Finn could see the wisdom in spreading out. It put her in position to cover Eamon, whatever he decided to do.
She couldn’t help admiring Eamon’s self-possession. She’d never seen him like this. There was an undeniable, almost frightening, authority about him. She could see it reflected in the eyes of the men as they watched him.
“Now is somebody going to tell me what’s going on?” Eamon asked.
“I’m Wesley Clayton,” said the man holding his shotgun pressed to the alien’s throat. He was a strapping fellow, more sure of himself than the others.
“I’m the Peacekeeper around these parts,” he stated, as if that should answer Eamon’s question.
“Hell of a job you’re doing, keeping the peace,” Eamon responded, making it clear he wasn’t impressed. “Looks like a lynching to me.”
