It was an older car, a 1958 Pontiac which burned oil and had thick black smoke coming out of its exhaust pipe. Inside the car was an older couple, American Indian by birth, both in their 50’s. They had been deprived of a child for so long it never occurred to them that they would have a son so late in life. Yet, a son is what he was. The baby boy lay in the back seat, comfortably wrapped in double blankets, sound asleep as the older couple navigated the high, tricky roads of Colorado. Worse yet, they were driving north on the outside lane. They could look down the side of the mountain, but couldn’t see the bottom.
Soldier's Gap is a non-traditional mystery with literary elements. The high school principal is brutally murdered, but Deputy Sheriff Dave Jenkins's search for meaning and love is a much more significant theme.
