An excerpt:
A STRANGE NEW PLACE
Thus I distinguish a moment passed
From a moment new;
And never have I drawn a straighter, more
Profound margin around a day’s passage.
All manner of sensations, simply sensed,
Are transformed, wholly:
That is no longer a tree!
And these are no longer my hands!
And all those eliciting effigies which formerly comprised my thought
Are now wondrous weavings
Twining Essence and Element inseparably.
Sounds too much the ravings of a simpleton;
But simplicity, we have long been told, is compensation given to Saints
For all their earthly disappointment.
A Saint I will never be:
A man, always,
Tested by the constant rigors of introspection and extroversion,
As are all men.
But in this familiar passage, do all men arrive here?
Is all this wondrous wonder only the most common experience?
It cannot be!
It cannot be...I would have heard!
Words beyond this avail me not;
Let those who wish extract from my stumbling phrases
This single image:
Love does indeed exist;
God’s gift,
To each who will contend,
Amidst fracture and folly,
For the true seed of Hope.
