What is the Healing Crystal and who is the rightful heir? Is it a religious object or a powerful weapon? Does it belong to a fallen line of kings or to the colonists of Survin? Should its fate be left in the hands of the young and inexperienced Kairma or to Narvin, the last descendent of a line of kings?

Kairma holds the Crystal and believes she will become the next leader of Survin, while her younger sister Kinter, believes she, not Kairma, is the rightful heir. Narvin believes the Healing Crystal is the Star of Genesis, a powerful relic his ancestors have been seeking for centuries. Determined to possess the object that will return him to his glory, Narvin is unwavering in his quest to possess it, and Kairma is caught in a fierce race across barren deserts and rugged mountains to a shattering finish where the winner must decide the fate of the world.

Excerpt

Taking the Crystal out, she placed it on the boulder and waited. Minutes slipped by and she began to question her sanity once again. She stared at it, marveling at the colors the Crystal produced. “Are you there? Can you hear me? Okay, so this is silly. I’m standing by a river waiting for a pretty stone to talk to me.” She reached for the Crystal to put it away. It was tinkling again, and the voice came back, startling her into nearly dropping the precious artifact.

“Please leave the Kloussen Drive in the sun. We did not retrieve enough data to analyze. Speaking your language will be difficult for us. It would appear from what we have overheard, you speak an almost pure form of twenty first century English. This is astonishing.”

It made no sense to Kairma. She caught enough of the meaning to understand the Crystal wanted to speak her language. She thought ruefully, What’s a Kloussen Drive? How can I put it in the sun if I don’t know what it is. She hesitated and then meekly asked, “Can I help you learn?”

There was a long pause, as if the Crystal was considering her words.
“We can interpret your language if we have enough data. Please tell us where you came from, and why you are here.”

That was a tall order. Kairma wasn’t really sure why she was here. The simple answer was that she had been run out of her home, but she didn’t think that was the answer a powerful holy relic was looking for.

Kairma spent the next hour explaining to the Crystal how the Survinees came to this canyon. She told it who was with her, who was lost, and who was left behind in Survin. Every once in a while, the Crystal would ask her to go into detail on some minor point, but mostly it was quiet. Kairma found talking to it made her feel good. She began to express more and more of her feelings about the other members of her clan and the circumstances that brought them here.

Every short while, the Crystal would give her a number. It was counting down. Kairma was assuming it would stop talking when the number reached zero. When the count was at thirty, the Crystal asked her to return the next day.

The tinkling sound returned when the count hit zero, and then it went silent. Kairma waited a long time and asked it several questions, but when it refused to respond, she placed the relic in its pouch and went back to the cabin. She hadn’t told anyone about the voices, and was thankful no one had come looking for her while she was confiding in the Crystal.

When Naturi asked where she had been for most of the afternoon, Kairma mumbled something about looking for berries and slipped past him. Collin was carrying out a bucket of ashes from the hearth as she came into the cabin. “You should take someone with you. It isn’t safe to be out there, alone. We still don’t know what’s become of Narvin or his men.”

She held the hide door aside for him, saying she would take someone with her if she went out again. Collin looked at her hard, but before he could elicit a promise from her, she quickly turned away and dashed off the sleeping room she shared with Kinter.

The next day she slipped away again, while everyone was busy with their own work. She found her rock, and placed the Crystal on it as she had the day before. She took a moment to retrace her steps, checking to see if she had been followed. It appeared she was alone, but as Kairma turned back around and looked at the boulder where the Crystal lay, she saw a woman sitting on a chair. A strange chair she’d never seen her before.

The woman rose from her seat and turned to Kairma. She was dressed in very similar clothes to Kairma’s, but they were made from finely woven fabric, not unlike the ancient clothes of the Gods. Kairma stopped. The woman raised her hand and said very slowly. “Do not fear Ensaris.” There was a long pause and Kairma’s muscles grew taught with anticipation, her breath coming in rapid gasps. After a while the woman continued, “Ensaris means Kairma no harm.” After another long pause, the woman said, “We must speak with you.”

Kairma stared in awe as a thousand questions flooded her mind. Her throat tight, her voice was barely over a whisper. “Who are you? What are you? Are you a God?”
