Donna was so enjoying the large flatscreen television that she almost forgot about her painful foot. But as the night wore on she took two of the hospital tablets and then drank a can of lager, just to make sure. This did the trick and she was laying on her sofa quite comfortably, about to drift off to sleep, when she heard her new telly crackling. The television was on very quietly, just for background noise, but in the distance Donna also heard a deep, low voice speaking.
"You’ll have to move on soon."
"Please, can I have a bit more time? I’ve got to help her, I can’t leave her like this."
Donna roused herself. That sounded like Pete’s voice. If she’d had a million pounds she would have bet it was him.
The deep, distant voice spoke again.
"All right, another four weeks. That’s all the time you have."
"Okay…" the voice that sounded like Pete’s drifted off into the ether.
With an effort, Donna prised her eyelids open with her fingers. Then she rolled over onto the carpet on her knees and waddled over to the television, where she placed an ear against one of the speakers. It had sounded as if the voices had come from there. But all she could hear was normal television noise.
A loud crack of thunder made her jump, nearly causing her to fall over. Donna turned the television off and crawled back to the settee, where she pulled herself back on.
"Maybe it’s true, everyone’s got a guardian angel, even me." She smiled as she felt her brain shutting down and she slipped into an alcohol and pills-induced sleep.
