WHEN Professor Mark Hills boarded the rear carriage of the 10.30 miniature railway from Heath to Downsend that fateful Thursday morning in late September, he thought it would be a practical and enjoyable way to survey the terrain. The eminent nuclear scientist was on his way to a top-secret meeting with other scientists to discuss the future of Downsend Nuclear Power Station, which was being de-commissioned. Professor Hills was hoping to persuade his colleagues, and a couple of government ministers, that vast areas of Romsey Marsh could become an underground bunker built to store the country's nuclear waste.
The Professor had spent the last twenty years working on a system to re-process toxic nuclear waste and transform it into electricity, using all the nuclear elements and leaving what little remained as harmless by-product. The machinery he had invented to perform this process he called the Nuclear Waste Reprocessing System (NWRS), which would finally be unveiled to his colleagues at Downsend. He was also looking forward to meeting up with Ray, a.k.a. Dr Raymond Wells, Head of Downsend C, who was a friend from University. He fondly remembered their times together discussing the latest trends in physics and arguing for one theory against another. They were exciting times for nuclear scientists, with new theories about particles coming out almost monthly. The Professor had decided there and then to devote the rest of his life into exploring new ways of using nuclear for the good of mankind, whereas his friend had taken a more practical route. Nonetheless, they had seen each other through good times and bad – their marriages, the birth of children, and his subsequent divorce from Alice, his childhood sweetheart.
