“Mom!” Karen screamed as she looked at the open window. Her sister was not in her bed and she never left the window wide open.
“What is it, Karen?” her mother asked exasperated.
“Come quick!”
Her mother came into Annalise’s room ready to give Karen a piece of her mind, but seeing Karen holding Annalise’s phone stopped her.
“What are you doing with her phone? You know how she hates you to mess with her stuff.”
“Mom, she’s not here! Something happened. She never goes anywhere without her phone.”
“What do you mean she’s not here?”
“When I got up, her door was closed so I came in to make sure she was all right. She’s usually up before me. She wasn’t here and she’s not in the bathroom. I threw her covers back and all I found was her tablet.”
“Joe, Joe!” her mother screamed. “Annalise is not here!”
Her husband came running into the bedroom. “Did you check outside?”
“No, just in the house. She’s not here. She wouldn’t have left her phone if she was out of the house!” Karen cried.
“Call the police!” Joe said, leaving the room. He went back to his room, put on his shoes and headed out the door. When he got to the back of the house, he saw bare footprints in the yard that began under Annalise’s window and then he saw the shoe prints where the footprints ended. His heart sank as he realized that she had probably ran away, again, but then—he didn’t understand why she would have left her phone. He went back into the house.
“Karen, bring me her phone!” he said.
Karen brought the phone and he had to play with it a moment before he could remember the password. When he opened up her messages and saw, “On the corner, black van,” his heart nearly stopped. He looked at his wife with tears in his eyes. He didn’t know how he knew, but he knew, their daughter had been kidnapped.
“Did you call the police?” he asked her.
“Yes, they said someone should be here, soon.” She had barely gotten the words out when the doorbell rang and when she opened the door, it was the Carnobia police.
“Ma’am,” the police officer at the door started. “You called the police about a missing daughter?”
“Yes, I did,” Anna said.
“May we come in?” he asked.
“Oh, certainly, come in, come in,” Anna said as she directed them to the living room.
“How old is your daughter, ma’am?” he asked.
“She’s nineteen,” she responded.
“Who discovered her missing?” he asked.
“Her sister, Karen,” she said.
“Ma’am, is it possible that she just ran away from home?”
Joe cleared his throat. “She has run away before, but she returned right away—it was about a fight with her sister. She and sister don’t always get along. But this time, she left her phone and with a strange message in it.”
“May I see the phone?” the police officer asked, pulling a pair of gloves out of his pocket.
“Certainly.” Joe handed him the phone.
After looking at the message for a moment, he scrolled through the messages with a stylus and found their address on an outgoing message.
“Sir, it looks like she gave someone your address and they probably picked her up.”
“Yeah, I know what it looks like, but what you don’t understand is, she never leaves the house without her phone. She went out the window—barefooted, probably carrying her shoes.”
The police officer sighed. “When did you discover her missing?” he asked.
“Her sister discovered her missing this morning,” Anna said.
