A writer trades fictional adventure for the real thing on a lecture tour in the American south.
Claire Anderson, recently successful screen writer/novelist living in Toronto, witnesses a strange sight. A nude man walks down her pre-dawn street and then vanishes.
While still struggling with the reality of what she has seen Claire's agent hands her a good reason to get out of town. She is given a short speaking tour of three colleges in the American south. Here she encounters a strange fundamentalist Christian cult and an FBI agent who is searching for his missing brother, also an agent.
In the process of searching for his brother the agent also disappears and Claire needs the help of the chief of campus police to find the two men who are being held by the strange cult.
This cult is convinced that they have found a way to go to heaven alive using the technology first tried in the World War two disaster called the Philadelphia experiment. However what they have found is simply a way of teleporting people from one place to another.
In the end all three men are all slated to die in the teleportation machine however Claire who is hiding in the surrounding woods fires a pistol into the building housing the machine destroying the computer that controls the device.
Before the cultists can chase her the entire compound is taken over by men from the Office of Navel Intelligence who were alerted to the action of the cult by an anonymous e-mail sent by Claire herself.
In the end Claire promises the agent in charge that she will write a book about the cult and its actions as an act of disinformation to hide the fact that the machine actually existed. To help her do this the FBI agent who was a prisoner of the cult for the longest time comes to stay with her also conveniently giving her a romantic ending to the whole tale.
