Extreme paramilitary groups such as the FARC - revolutionary armed forces of Colombia - use the vast amounts of money generated from their drug trafficking and kidnapping to sponsor their long-running rebel war on the Colombian government.
'The Thief's Son' takes place in the small southern town of Sevilla. Sam Locke is a brilliant young photo-journalist from England. For the past few months Sam has been travelling through Colombia covering its rebel uprising. But he has a second, more important reason for being in Colombia! Sam is looking for estranged father Jack. Jack Locke, a seasoned London criminal, fled the capital during the early eighties, leaving behind Sam and his wife.
After several aimless years floating around south America, Jack settled in Colombia. He now has a new criminal enterprise going on. Jack is kidnapping foreigners too! He thinks it will make him a lot of money, certainly more than he made cracking safes back in London. During his last few days of his Colombian trip, Sam finds himself kidnapped. Not by the rebel army but by a gang of men who work for his own father.
Jack is completely oblivious to this at first. He has more pressing concerns. The rebels now know of Jack's kidnapping scam too and are not best pleased at having to compete with an outsider for the spoils! It is Sam's bad luck that he finds himself slap, bang in the middle!

I found myself drawn into the mystery and intrigue of the son's relationship with his father and the father's obsession with the next big scheme. I couldn't stop reading until this book was finished. The ending left me just as obsessed with the next grand adventure as Jack Locke is.

Very entertaining!
I bought this book because my friend recommended it to me. I read it in three days, a few hours each evening.Really enjoyed it, the author really describes the action well. If you are looking for a read that will set your imagination alight, this is the one.
