“Okay through here,” Sam said as he opened the door at the far end and showed them through to a small room. “You can relax in here while I go find my contact,” he told them. “There's a bathroom through there and in that cubby hole down there you'll find some food. Just snacks I'm afraid but it'll fill a hole. You can get hot drinks from the nutri-vend over there or there's water in the dispenser. Make yourselves at home, I shouldn't be long.”
“Thanks buddy,” Vincent said as he and Farra went in. Sam left them and they took a look around.
“I'd love a shower,” Farra said, “but is there any point when we'll just have put these stinking clothes back on again?”
“Probably not,” he agreed. “Better stick to just face and hands till we get back to the ship huh?”
“I wonder if Wesley is here right now” she said and Vincent shrugged his shoulders.
“I don't know baby, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me if he isn't here. I don't get a feeling of him being close right now. Here, come show me how to make that tea will ya?”
“Do you think we're being had?” she asked as she made the tea.
“What do you mean?” he replied with a frown.
“Well, do you reckon Sam is on the level?”
“Oh, so you're wondering that now too huh?” he smiled. “I've wondered that from the beginning actually.”
“I guess he just seems a little secretive to me,” she replied.
“Well we can't expect him to be totally open about everything, he's a Merc. That's what they're like. Never quite on one side or the other and always on their own side.”
“Yeah I guess so,” she said as she handed him a mug of tea. “Only he said he’s not a Merc but an official guy, so he should be on the right side.”
“Don't worry baby,” he said as he sipped his drink. “I promise I won't allow him to screw us for too long. I'll let him carry on thinking of us as an average married couple who don't have a brain cell between them if it makes him feel comfortable and if it gets us where we want to be but the moment I feel he's dicking me around too much then I'll bring the hammer down. I'm on it baby don't worry okay? Now kiss me and tell me how much you love me.”
They sat down and drank their tea and ate the snacks they found in the little cubby hole and they cried together as they talked about Gabriel. They laughed about the funny things he does; the way he always slaps Vincent awake every morning at six o clock and the way he giggles when Farra pretends to nibble his ear. They cried as they thought of him missing them and being scared and wondering why they weren't there and they cried with the pain of their empty arms yearning to hold him again and the worry of whether he would come back to them alive or dead.
The door opened and Sam entered, a grave look on his face. Vincent and Farra looked at each other, knowing the news they were about to receive.
“He's not here is he?” Vincent said, making it a statement rather than a question.
“We've missed him by four hours,” Sam sighed and thumped the table in frustration. “Shit, I really though we had a chance here what with the dragons an all.”
“What did your contact say?” Farra asked.
“He said Wesley stopped just to refuel, get fresh supplies and have a shower and a meal and left straight away. He was here for three hours max. They did offer him a bed for the night but he refused, saying he had an appointment on Maglon 6.”
“Maglon 6?” Vincent replied. “So at least we know where to go next.”
“That's if he told the truth,” Sam replied. “There's three possible routes he could take from here. Maglon and Corroptima are within flying distance to land and refuel, or he could refuel at the deep space refuelling stop and then head on to Regnor.”
“Regnor?” Vincent said. “I was there once in the military. I got a medal for valour there. I wonder if he's headed there just because of my connection with the place. Y'know, the irony? That's the kind of thing that turns him on.”
“Really?” Sam said and Vincent and Farra both nodded.
“Yeah,” Farra said, “he'd think it was real clever to go there to kill our son, since Vincent got a medal for valour there. He'd be over the moon at the irony of it.”
“Y'see Sam,” Vincent explained, “because I was brave once when I was there and got some buddies out of a tight spot they were in; the fact that I couldn't even rescue my own son in the same place would prove to him in his twisted mind that I'm not brave at all and therefore, no better than he is. He'd then be able to feel that I'm just as much of a useless shit as he is and that would give him a real hard on.”
“Well then,” Sam said as he scratched his chin, “why don't we hang out halfway between the refuelling station and Regnor instead of halfway between Maglon and Corroptima and wait for news from there? That way, wherever he ends up, we'll be pretty nearby and if he does go to Regnor as you think, we'll get there much quicker than he thinks we will.”
