The five of us arrived at Donal’s apartment shortly before ten. He made drinks while I set up my vidicom camera and reminded Ren how to make sure the additional enhancement recorded everything the Consoria would be transmitting. Once we were sitting down I updated everyone on the details Tinnias had given me. When I finished, the room was silent as everyone tried to digest what they had heard.
“Shit,” Donal replied and ran a hand through his thinning hair. “Holy fucking shit.” This was the first time I’d heard him curse and I knew he was scared. “I suddenly feel very old and frail,” he whispered.
“I’m suddenly scared that I won’t have a chance to get old and frail,” Palko said, his voice shaking ever so slightly.
“I know buddy,” Ren said. “We’re all scared and it’s okay. Being scared means we care about our lives and that’s a good thing. Never wish to be unafraid, not ever. That would mean you’d lost your love for life.”
“Well this scares me more than I’ve ever been scared in my whole life,” Doniss said. “But it also makes me more determined that I’m gonna fight with everything I have to stop them doing whatever they’re doing. This is too serious not to fight for and I would rather die fighting it than end up one of those things.”
“Here here,” I replied. “We’re all in this together okay? No one is fighting alone, remember that, all of you.”
“Thank you guys,” Marlo said and everyone looked at him. “Ren and Joss, you’re not from Deligon but you’re here helping us fight this awful shit and you might not get out of it with your lives or your minds intact. I appreciate that and I want you to know it.” He blushed as we all looked at him.
“Thank you buddy,” I replied.
“Thanks Marlo,” Ren smiled and nodded.
“Now I have to get to work guys,” I said as I stood and reached for my jacket. “I’ll be back shortly after eight in the morning so I’ll try not to wake you up.”
“Here’s a spare key Joss,” Donal said. “Let yourself in and find a spare place to crash. Help yourself to anything you need okay?”
“Thanks. See you all in the morning guys.”
