A Tender Moment in a House of Ill Repute
We made it across the Atlantic to Barbados, arriving just in time to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Two weeks later, Den (my Dutch friend) and I are hard at it, every day, in a Bridgetown brothel. There’s not much privacy either, we work at the rear of the establishment, in an open shed, exposed to the derisive laughter and unasked for advice from the local Cajuns.
‘Hey mon, wat cha doo-in?’
‘Well g’day, we’re makin’ a little dinghy.’ Our laid back accents are almost vying for the horizontal.
‘Oh, you makin’ a little boat for the big boat, dat’s good, hey mon, you gonna fibaglas dat ding?’
This is the basic conversation, repeated on the hour with each new smiling face.
As our cupboard-bred collection of materials begrudgingly transforms into an object of nautical symmetry, the laughter increases. What I look upon as fine lines, the locals view as a receptacle for ice and cold beer. If only we would ‘fibaglas dat ding mon.’

Jackie and Noel have included everything they can think of that they themselves have experienced and learned lessons from in its 330 odd pages. . . What immediately becomes apparent is that there is a wealth of information, page after page, covering any particular cruising topic you could think of.

It is written in a way which makes it very easy to read it in chunks and absorb the information given. The advice is very practical and very well illustrated. It doesn’t just cover all the pleasantries of cruising, it includes warts and all.
A thoroughly good read, and a must if you are considering hitting the Big Blue.
Bluewater beauty and survival
Author Jackie parry has published a thoughtful book, Cruisers' Accumulated Acumen, about planning and sailing long-distance voyages. She based her information not only on her own voyages around the pacific with her husband, Parry informally queried other bluewater sailors and shipwrecked survivors to get some idea of what gear and strategies work best on a boat. Cruiser's AA is written in short sections with tables and bullet points, and "short stories," little bits of tales told to illustrate rather than lecture. A great example from the book is the section on grab-bag gear. She lists candidate items suggested to her by other sailors, and then comments, sometimes humorously, on each one. There are other books that describe gear, provisioning and so on for passagemaking. What sets Cruisers' AA apart is the tongue-in-cheek, humorous nature of Parry's writing, and a willingness to go where others have not; onboard beauty. She devotes an entire chapter to looking good at sea. And after a long sail who couldn't use a little sprucing up?
