Kelly forced herself to look through the window pane, past the blood, into the yard beyond. She still could not see either man, nor could she see her horses in the field. It felt to her as if they had all just simply disappeared. She backed away from her window, spun on her heel, and ran from her room.
Running up the hall, Kelly was petrified, but the driving need to know what was happening propelled her forward. As she reached the kitchen door, Deputy Krantz entered the threshold. he was shaking his head back and forth and couldn't seem to make eye contact with her. 'Maybe I'm imagining this,' she thought to herself. 'Maybe I'm losing my mind.'
"Mrs. Price," Deputy Krantz began, "I don't know how to tell you this."
