I had moments of happiness but there was always a gray cloud looming in the distance. I never felt good enough and thought that if I worked hard enough, behave responsibly enough or did what the Bible said enough, I would somehow find what was missing. I didn't understand it until the shocking premature death of my close family member raised the question, "If you were to drop dead right this moment, would you have regrets?"

Growing up, all I heard was my soul was lost. It was the dev-il’s playground making me act mean to my baby sister, dance to ooky-duke music and challenge the beliefs and doctrine of my church. Yes, I said ooky-duke, my dad’s favorite descriptor of music that made you want to shake your hips. It was a problem. It was the reason I couldn’t be “saved” like people told me I needed to be. It was the reason I prayed so hard to go right yet couldn’t overcome the urge to go left.
How many of us have rejected our own soul because someone we looked up to rejected it first? They taught us to ignore it. That being grown up was concealing it. Jane Fonda said it and I agree. “We’re not meant to be perfect. We’re meant to be whole.” That’s why I wrote this book. It’s to connect you to the very barometer of your life’s joy -- your soul.
