Mom's footsteps echoed, as she ran across the room toward me. "What's wrong, Christian?"
Without speaking I raised my hand and pointed toward the other house.
"It's the house in the picture, isn't it?" she asked.
All I could do was nod slowly.
"Come see what I have found," she said. She grabbed my shoulders, breaking the spell, and directed me to one of the pictures. "Look closely. Do you recognize anyone?"
As I focused on the house in the picture, a funny feeling crept over me. I shook my head and tried to clear my thoughts. Looking harder, I did see something.
"Who is the man in the picture?" I asked.
"I think it is your Great-grandfather. Of course, he's a lot younger, but look how he's dressed. He has on what they called knickers and a straw hat."
"No, not him," I said. "I mean the man standing next to him, the one in the soldier uniform. I think it's a Union soldier."
Mom leaned closer to the picture. "There's no soldier in this picture, Christian."
