The day began as it usually did. One guard on a horse, David Brooks, and two other convicts made the three mile trek to the plantation. Their day started at 5:00 AM, with a quick breakfast of hard rolls, water and once in a while, a piece of dried beef. The humidity was high, and the sky was thick with black clouds. It usually took an hour to walk the three miles, and by the time they arrived at the plantation, beads of smelly sweat began pouring off their brows. By the time they arrived, they welcomed a small gust of wind that seemed to be strengthening as they got closer to the plantation. Brooks had been at the prison farm less than a year, and he was facing four more years, if he was lucky. Most of the convicts did not live out their sentence. They were either shot, died of heat stroke or malnutrition. David was well liked by the foreman and he, along with two other convicts, was given special treatment. Working on the plantation meant you would eat the previous day’s leftovers that the owners or help did not eat. It was far better than the food at the prison farm and often served as slop. The convicts never complained. It was far better than working the sugar cane fields and being tortured by the rays of the deathly Texas sun.
By 10:00 AM it was clear that a storm had began overpowering the three workers, making their labors difficult. The escalating winds began pulling the roof tiles off the roof and the shutters were flapping. The three men had begun putting up the storm covers in the pounding rain and they were fighting debris that was flying in their face. The guard told them to keep working and he cracked a whip. It was a slow process and finally, the guard blew his whistle for the men to stop for lunch.
