Jason Brady had just come home from a ten-day trail ride with six of his friends after delivering a hundred head of cattle to a rancher outside of Buffalo, Texas. Jason lived with his grandparents on a small farm just south of Austin, Texas, and he was anxious to get home. As he got to the top of the hill, he saw the faded, wood-frame farmhouse his grandfather had built, and he gave his horse a swift kick. It was mid-September and he noticed that the yellow, decaying crops needed to be plowed under. It had been a dry summer and the few crops that had survived the drought had already been harvested; it was a never-ending process. Jason had taken over a lot of the chores from his grandfather, who was aging now, and it seemed there was always something that needed to be done. He loved his grandparents, and while he enjoyed getting away from time to time with his friends, he couldn’t wait to get home and to his grandmother’s delicious home cooking.
Jason’s grandmother and grandfather were at the kitchen table when he sauntered in, and he hurried over to the water bucket. He filled the dipper three times and quickly quenched his thirst. He walked around the table and leaned over to kiss his grandmother on the forehead and did the same with his grandfather.They welcomed him and went back to their conversation.They were speaking in German and he noticed a letter sprawled out on the table which was also written in German. Jason never learned the language, but had heard enough of the same words that he could sometimes guess what they were talking about. He recognized some of the words and knew immediately that there had been a death in the family.
