“Once the enemy strikes, he brings his whole army.” I stared out at the empty lawn behind Sadie France’s home. It had only been a few days since the last Greener Valley major crime.

While my husband Brogan was the town sheriff, he rarely dealt with anything more than petty theft. Since he’d been in a coma, the flood gates opened. It was as if our small town had moved into a new age, an era where crime would now be part of the town’s fabric, its very existence.

Mary and Claire, Sadie’s two daughters, were no longer chasing one another around their playset. No one heard, “Watch me,” in sing-song voices as they jumped on the trampoline. They weren’t running in and out of the fancy log cabin playhouse custom-made by their grandfather.

The silence was a reminder. Sadie’s twin girls weren’t there. Someone had taken them from their home.

As I stood at Sadie’s kitchen window, I couldn’t imagine the horrors this young mother was experiencing. In her short life of twenty-five years, she had known tremendous pain. The year before, her first husband lost his battle with cancer. And now, their daughters were missing.
