Patrick moves to Quincy, IL, a town 300 miles away. He has throat cancer. Eve calls him regularly and tells him about her new life as a registered nurse.
She travels to Quincy to see Patrick when she isw told be his friend, PAul Connors, that Patrick is dying.
She and Paul are immediately attracted to each other. Patrick dies of his cancer and Eve and Paul begin a relationship that lasts many years. She travels to Quincy to see him and he, in turn, travels to Chicago, where Eve lives.
The story takes them to the end of their lives.
